John Hollenbeck’s All Can Work is an album of awe-inspiring majest. ollenbeck delivers layer after layer for listeners to explore. Shimmering horns, beautifully placed punctuations and little sonic surprises abound. It’s wonderfully complex music played beautifully, with precision and abandon, by a band that has spent a good deal of time together. Frank Alkyer, Downbeat Magazine. In the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, the variety of textures involved is plainly remarkable. So is the range of emotional registers: His music can be dirge-like, ludic, abstracted - sometimes multiple things at once. Those are among the big joys of All Can Work, an arresting new album from the ensemble. Giovanni Russonello, The New York Times.

John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble All Can Work. It would be hard to mistake All Can Work as anything other than a tribute to former collaborators and teachers. The harmonic ebb and flow, the emotional upheavals, the sublime melodic reveries, these qualities all speak to the grand moments and indescribable nuance of relationships formed in creative conditions. John Hollenbeck has always wielded a curious lyricism (see: Claudia Quintet), but never has it crystalized quite as exquisitely as this. The Best Jazz Albums of 2018.

All Can Work represents the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble’s accumulation of years rehearsing, recording and performing together since its founding in 1998 - the definitive evolution of an exceptional ensemble that has developed a relationship akin to family (some members of which Hollenbeck has been playing with since high school and college). The album also pays tribute to artists who have influenced Hollenbeck most throughout the years: Bob Brookmeyer, Kenny Wheeler, Billy Strayhorn, John Taylor, William Shakespeare, and Piet Mondrian.
