Although Mali's politics remain a tenuous concern, the civil war that embroiled the African nation during sessions for Touré's previous album eventually resulted in a 2015 peace agreement, and this shift can be heard in the vigor and vitality of these recordings. Named after a large traditional drum used to call people together in his native region of Gao, Toubalbero brings together a dynamic and decidedly younger group of musicians to back the veteran singer/guitarist, lending a crackle of energy and festivity to the sessions.
Sidi Touré’s Toubalbero is an exuberant and irresistible call out for unity and peace for Malians and Africans. Much like the drum that gathers folks in Goa, this album’s aim is to unite through joyous expression for the greater good of all. Unity is strength and joy is unstoppable. Sidi Touré will be touring throughout 2018. Since his debut album, he has performed at leading world music festivals in Germany, France, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. He has performed at New York’s Lincoln Center, Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music and even as far as the Herring Auditorium.

Acclaimed Malian musician Sidi Touré returns with his fourth album, Toubalbero. Named after the large traditional drum used to gather people in the Malian region of Gao, Toubalbero is a danceable, dynamic, and despite the region’s significant political challenges, joyous album. Toure weaves beautifully textured songs; each takes a snapshot of an individual Songha musical style, from takamba dances to the holley played in possession rituals to the gao-gao played at joyful times like weddings. - NPR Music First Listen. As a Western listener, theres always some enlightening novelty in hearing the blues- especially the blues coming from a place currently as fouled-up as Mali recast as something so bright, so unapologetically hopeful.
