Anatole Fistoulari brings a fiery Philharmonia Orchestra to the intensity of Brahms' concerto. If anything Milstein begins a bit reticent and cool where overplaying the Brahms seems an easy trap to fall into. The soloist basks in the spotlight of a glowing slow movement, and by the final movement he and the orchestra are easy partners. Tempi in both pieces is perfect. These performances by Nathan Milstein of two of the violin concerto masterpieces have long been treasured by music lovers. The Tchaikovsky was recorded in 1959, the Brahms in 1961, and were issued separatedly previously. Both are in resplendently modernized sound. How could you go wrong?

The recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto by Nathan Milstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bruno Walter was the first classical long-playing record, and the first 12" LP of any kind, in 1948. The issue marked Columbia Records' move away from the 78 rpm format for classical, and the success of Columbia's format soon forced RCA to follow suit. The recording had already been released as Columbia Masterworks Set M-MM-577 in 1945
