Like a swallow There's no risk I'll whisk them up in no moonlight And though pigs can fly They'll never find us Posing as the night And I'm home before the morning. Meet them over at Dover I'll just pilot the motor Take them over the water Like a swallow flying to Malta.
The grimy cotton quilt on the sidewalk looked like a heap of discarded rags until it began to wiggle. In the dim glow of a street lamp, two 13-year-old vagabonds, Zani and Sipho, crawled from their makeshift bed. Sipho said he had run away from Katlehong, a black township a dozen miles away. Zani said he drifted in from Newcastle, 240 miles distant, in Natal. A 14-year-old named Jeffrey said he had lived on the streets for three years since coming from Swaziland to look for a school. The pupils of his eyes had dilated, apparently from sniffing glue. The Institute of Behavioral Studies at the University of South Africa estimated four years ago that 9,000 children lived on streets across the country. Their number has doubtless swelled since laws restricting the movements of blacks were scrapped in 1986.
