Quarteto Novo ‎– Quarteto Novo. Label: Odeon ‎– MOFB 3503. This extremely important album was one of the earliest to mix influences from traditional Brazilian folk forms with Jazz sensibilities. Out of print since the mid 70's, it has recently been re-issued to the south american market.

The sole album by the legendary Quarteto Novo was released by the Odeon label in 1967 and was accorded various coveted Brazilian artistic prizes, including the Troféu Roquette Pinto and the Troféu Imprensa. The band was made up of four now legendary Brazilian musicians: percussionist Airto Moreira; bassist, guitarist, and violinist Theo de Barros; guitarist, violinist, violist, and sometimes banjo player Heraldo do Monte (these three musicians all being members of the previous Trio Novo); and later arrival Hermeto Pascoal. Quarteto Novo - and their patron and songwriting collaborator Geraldo Vandré - had a deep, some would say obsessional, interest in American bebop; combine them and you have something very special indeed. Though in many ways, these eight songs sound somewhat quaint to undisciplined in the 21st century, the opposite is actually quite true.

Quarteto Novo only released one album, yet they number amongst one of the more influential acts in Brazilian music. Originally set up as a trio by a pharmaceutical company who wanted a live band at an event, they were then picked up by Geraldo Vandré (who was, at that time in 1966, the winner of a Brazilian music popularity competition) for a tour of the Brazilian North East.

Profile: Short-lived Brazilian quartet formed in 1967. Percussionist Airto Moreira, guitarist Heraldo Do Monte and bassist Theo De Barros were known as Trio Novo. Hermeto Pascoal joined them and the group changed its name to Quarteto Novo. They were the first band to play a sound associated with Northeastern Brazil, based on baião and mixed with jazz improvisations. Despite recording just one eponomous album the group have had a significant influence on Brazilian music. Members: Airto Moreira, Heraldo Do Monte, Hermeto Pascoal, Theo De Barros.

The absolute holy grail recording for Brazilian jazz, this long out of print album is a must for any lover of Brazilian folk music, Samba, and Jazz from Brazil. A super-group of musicians who would bring the music of Brazil to a world-wide audience in the years to come, this recording documents the beginning of the careers of Airto Moreira - percussionist with Miles Davis and Chick Corea, and Husband and main collaborator to Brazilian vocalist Flora Purim-; Hermeto Pascoal - Multi-instrumentalist/Composer and side man with such notable musicians as Miles Davis(who called Pascoal his most important influence), Cal Tjader, Egberto Gismonte and Donald Byrd among others; Heraldo Do Monte, one of Brazil's most famed masters of the guitar; and Theo De Barres, renowned bassist and guitarist. This extremely important album was one of the earliest to mix influences from traditional Brazilian folk forms with Jazz sensibilities. It is also credited as one of the first Brazilian albums to feature compositions using odd time signatures in a Samba feel. Out of print since the mid 70's, it has recently been re-issued to the south american market. Still hard to find, but well worth the trouble.
