A Sea Symphony is a composition for orchestra and chorus by Ralph Vaughan Williams, written between 1903 and 1909. Vaughan Williams' first and longest symphony, it was first performed at the Leeds Festival in 1910, with the composer conducting

A Sea Symphony, The Wasps - Aristophanic Suite ‎(2xReel, 4tr Stereo, Album). but Neo-Classical is a misnomer here.

Vaughan Williams "A Sea Symphony" is one of the greatest and most inspiring works of the 20th century, with excepts from Walt Whitman's masterpiece, "Leaves of Grass". No other work better captures the majesty and beauty of the Sea. Here we have, if I'm not mistaken, the first live recording ever produced by Chandos and the audience is extremely quite to the point of not even knowing they are their. What really impressed me about this recording were the subtleties and nuances of phrasing during the quiet passages such as "And all that went down doing their duty" in the first movement and "Wherefore, unsatisfied soul? Whither O mocking life?" in the last movement are very moving. The overture to "The Wasps" is a great opening and played with aplumb. Two caveats; the timpani tends to get muddy and lacks definition.

But the 1970 RCA recording by André Previn should be considered a worthy competitor because it is comparable in atmosphere, power, and glorious orchestral color; it may even have an edge for its clearer details. With the London Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus and vocal soloists Heather Harper and John Shirley-Quirk at his command, Previn's resources are quite as rich as Boult's, and he elicits a performance every bit as magnificent and mystical; both conductors achieve awe-inspiring results with this symphony, which ranks as one of the most profound choral works of the twentieth.

The parts marked with a star are optional parts to allow the work to be performed with fewer winds; specifically without Flute 3, Oboe 2, and the Bass clarinet. Several parts are missing from the set: the optional part for the English horn when there is no Oboe 2; and both Harp parts. Leeds Festival Chorus and Orchestra, Ralph Vaughan Williams (conductor).

The appropriate sub-genre for Vaughan-Williams would be Late-Romantic (or Post-Romantic) -- like Rachmaninoff -- much closer to Elgar than Stravinsky, Poulenc, and Milhaud.... One could mount an argument for Impressionism as an influence at a deep level as well.... but Neo-Classical is a misnomer here.
