On Ronroco, Gustavo Santaolalla creates a song cycle of original songs in the vein of traditional Argentinian music. Santaolalla infuses Argentinian music with jazz and prog-rock influences, creating a unique hybrid layered with harmonic overtones and complex polyrhythms. He augments his guitar with indigenous instruments, and often trades melodic lines with vibraphonist Anibal Kerpel, resulting in a hypnotic record that sounds like nothing else in worldbeat.

With Ronroco, Gustavo Santaolalla, an Oscar winner for his score to Brokeback Mountain in 2005, fuses conventional styles with a progressive sensibility, in an album of original tunes inspired by traditional Argentinean music and influenced by music of Japan, Africa, and Eastern Europe. The record takes its name from the ronroco, a stringed instrument similar to the charango, although slightly larger and lower in pitch.

Released January 13, 1998.
