Thrones is the sophomore album from Aurvandil, a French black metal project formed in 2006 by the band’s driving force Aurvandil (don’t you just love one man bands whose pseudonyms are the name of the band). Well, Aurvandil (the man) allowed a drummer, Fog, into to his club for this recording. While this is only Aurvandil’s second full length album, there are a slew of demos and splits to the band’s name. Eschewing the typical French black metal sound, Aurvandil instead mixes second wave Norwegian black metal with the icy and glacial atmospherics of the Quebecois black metal scene.

AURVANDIL Thrones, released 21 April 2014 1. For Whom Burnest Thou 2. The Harvest of Betrayal 3. Summon the Storms 4. Ingen Lindring All yearning embittered, the flesh is shed, the Journey ends. AURVANDIL returns with "Thrones" carved in stone and snow, distillating the essence of soaring, northern purity throughout four hymns of Iron and Ice, four funereal storms summoned. Skyclad and possessed, AURVANDIL weaves a wyrd of holocaust. Here, the contrast between light and dark is precisely what pushes this album beyond simply another black metal album.
