The Rugged Man, and a young Brooklyn emcee known as Mos Def, among others. There was no filler here and the album showed the hunger and strength of all these up-and-coming emcees. The first of several amazing compilations to emerge from the Rawkus camp. 10. Various Artists - Lyricist Lounge Vol. 2 (2000). A landmark indie release distributed by Rawkus, this dark and dense lo-fi masterpiece served as an album that still gets regarded as highly influential and remains as important now as it did in ’97. Tracks like The Fire In Which You Burn and Silence are just chilling. 3. Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek are Reflection Eternal - Train Of Thought (2000).

Rawkus Records was an American hip-hop record label known for jump-starting the careers of many rappers. Label heads Brian Brater and Jarret Myer then signed some of the top underground talent from the New York area, notably Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek and Company Flow, who went on to define the label’s sound. The string of 12" releases and full-length albums that followed helped initiate a resurgence in the New York/East Coast sound

That voice was Rawkus Records. By the end of the decade they had a roster of MCs that came to be revered as some of the greatest of all-time: Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli, to name a few. At its peak, the label released iconic records like Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, Monch's Internal Affairs, and Mos Def's Black on Both Sides. Still, the classics produced during Rawkus' run are too good to be forgotten. I'm a big fan of early Rawkus recordings and I hope you'll like this selection of my favourite tunes from their catalogue.

Train of Thought is the debut album of American hip hop duo Reflection Eternal, released October 17, 2000 on Rawkus Records. Kweli had previously worked with rapper Mos Def as the duo Black Star, and Hi-Tek had served as producer on the duo's debut album.
