Not many folks know David Ruffin’s name, but pretty much everyone has heard his voice. His spiced-honey croon and sandpaper shout fueled The Temptations biggest hits from their classic era, My Girl, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, I’m Losing You, and I Wish It Would Rain. Truth is, Ruff’s voice was the most powerful instrument in Motown’s arsenal. Even Marvin Gaye, arguably the only man at Motown who could out-sing Ruffin, envied his depth and artistry, calling him a monster singer, saying that Ruffin’s voice had a power his own lacked  . And I can’t say that the release of the David album would have put him on a path that transcended the demons and addictions that battered his career and destroyed his body. But I’ll always wonder. David Ruffin was a singer whose voice was a part of my own story for as long as I’ve loved music.

I never thought Peter's solo album was bad. It was a good record, just not a Kiss record. Definitely better than Gene's. I remember my older brother owning all four of the solo albums in the . they had the original interlocking posters. I'm Gonna Love You" s a great opener & "I Can't Stop The Rain" is a very classy swan song! When these 4 rad album covers are put together in unison they are "The Magnificent Four"! intermarinita to curse that goddamn sk. .OK there are many of them. I'm sitting in the back of my car rn thinking about my ex, we just broke up.

Album/track producers and arrangers were not listed on the LP jacket. Songs for the album were recorded in Detroit, at Hitsville (Studio A) with horns and strings overdubbed at Golden World (Studio B), from July 1968 throught the first week of April 1969. Everlasting Love was first tracked for the Four Tops in early February 1968; they did not record vocals and the tune was re-assigned to Ruffin and overdubbed by him in March 1969

Born David Eli Ruffin in Whynot, Mississippi, the son of a strict and sometimes abusive Baptist minister, Ruffin, like many of the performers who’d go on to Motown stardom, got his start singing in church. Along with his older siblings, he was part of a traveling gospel group that opened for Mahalia Jackson and the legendary Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. He also had modest success recording with his brother Jimmy as The Ruffin Brothers, their 1970 album "I Am My Brothers Keeper" cracking the Billboard 200. A third solo album was recorded in 1971, but Motown mothballed it (the record wouldn’t come out until 2004, more than a decade after Ruffin’s death). Abandoned by his label and with his career in a tailspin, Ruffin's cocaine abuse worsened. Ruffin left Motown and signed with Warner Bros. where he released two solo albums in the late 1970s.
