Only 1 left in stock (more on the way). The feeling of Americana that comes across on Worse for the Wear, Pryor's third album under the New Amsterdams name, is not like that of, say, Ryan Adams, despite the rapsy voice, twilight glow of the creaky Rhodes organ, and the confessional-style songwriting. This is simply stripped-down pop with a twang, marking both a curious departure from the usual Gram Parsons palette and the potential birth of new genre, with standout songs like "The Spoils of the Spoiled" and "Hanging on for Hope" acting as signifiers along the way. Call it nu depression.
The third album by Matthew Pryor's Get Up Kids' side project, the New Amsterdams, splits the difference between the full-band Never You Mind, and the entirely solo Para Toda Vida, returning the rhythm section of the former, while keeping the largely acoustic focus of the latter
The Spoils of the Spoiled, 02:32. Hover Near Fame, 03:13. Hanging On for Hope, 03:20. The Smoking Gun, 03:14. Worse for the Wear, 03:25.
This song is by The New Amsterdams and appears on the album Worse for the Wear (2003). All my life I've been waiting. It get's older, it's over me. I'd speak but it fails me. So the dike in the damn stops the leak. Maybe it's me and I'm venting. I find your speech otivating, watching life pass you by on the screen. Just flicker and fading with a plot like you wouldn't believe. Maybe I don't know the ending. Someone ruined my daydream. Aren't you spoiled enough as it is?
Worse for the Wear is an album by The New Amsterdams, released in 2003. This is the first New Amsterdams album to have a full band, as the previous albums have always been primarily solo material from the lead singer Matt Pryor as a side project from The Get Up Kids. It was recorded over the course of three months at the Red House Studios in Eudora, Kansas
