This article includes an overview of the major events and trends in popular music in the 1950s. Various genre in the First World, rock and roll, doo-wop, pop, swing, rhythm and blues, blues, Country music, rockabilly, and jazz music dominated and defined the decade's music. Rock and roll dominated popular music in the mid 1950s and late 1950s, and quickly spread to much of the rest of the world.

65 TV Themes! From the 50's and 60's is the first volume of the Television's Greatest Hits series of compilation albums by TVT Records. From the 50's and 60's was a double LP that featured 65 themes from television shows ranging from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s. The album catalog was later acquired by The Bicycle Music Company

A great journey down memory lane. I remember most of the themes from the first five volumes of this set. After the mid Eighties, I watched very little commercial TV so the last two volumes of this set have little to offer me. It is quite true that some of the tracks, particularly on the first volume have some equalization problems. I rememver the version on volume five, but the volume one version may have been from the first year or so of the series. Unlike those purists that complain about the contents of this series, my memory is far from perfect when it comes to precisely identifying music from fifty years ago. Whether or not this set has what you want depends on whether you simply want to refresh those fond memories or whether you are a purist who refuses to be satisfied by re-creations that are mostly close to the originals.

Dazed and Confused, one of the lead, legendary originals from the band’s self-titled debut, however, helped lay down the groundwork for a storied decade to come. 76. The Shangri-Las, Leader of the Pack The Shangri-Las’ 1965 album Leader of the Pack never performed as well on the charts as the singles it spawned. This song in particular, the first song off 1966’s album of the same name, was an especially soulful and successful example of their musical spark. 73. Louis Armstrong, What a Wonderful World Supposedly, this ballad was written as a response to the turbulent times when the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war protests were reaching their peak temperatures. If it was a balm, it failed, but if it was just another gentle song and career highlight for jazz pioneer Louis Armstrong, the tune was still a huge success.

The fifth album from the Chicago-born pianist Andrew Hill catapulted him to the top tier of forward-looking jazz composers of the ’60s. As Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane pioneered jazz’s New Thing movement, loosening the shackles of long-established chord progressions, Hill’s tight-knit pieces played within them, drawing on post-bop, avant-garde, and the blues. At a young age, he was mentored on the instrument by the quick-fingered jazz titan Art Tatum, and this album of originals, reinterpretations, and spontaneous performances adds another dimension to his staggering talent.
