ABBA is the third (second internationally) studio album by the Swedish pop group of the same name. It was originally released on 21 April 1975 through Polar Music and featured the hits "Mamma Mia" and "SOS". Following the Eurovision success of "Waterloo", ABBA saw the band gaining worldwide recognition. I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" topped the charts in Australia, as did "Mamma Mia" shortly after. SOS" and "Mamma Mia" became hits in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Fernando" was ABBA's first non-album single, released in November 1975. Lead vocals were sung by Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The track appeared on the 1976 ABBA release Greatest Hits in some countries, although in Australia and New Zealand, "Fernando" was included on the group's Arrival album. Fernando" also features on the multi-million selling ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits compilation. This song was to become ABBA's biggest selling single of all time, selling 6,000,000 copies in 1976 alone. All in all, Fernando sold over 10 million copies worldwide
On this album ABBA definitely took strides forward artistically and their dance pop music advanced to more rock. There is hard rock, pop rock and dance rock here. The album opens with the very strong EAGLE and the second side of the album was a mini musical that they had started performing in concerts with highlights being THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC and the amazing I'M A MARIONETTE. Other standouts are the hits THE NAME OF THE GAME and TAKE A CHANCE ON ME. This album is a perfect illustration of why hit collections of ABBA's work deprive the listener of their true artistry. ABBA-The Album" was a commercial hit world-wide. The album reached in the UK, the Top 10 in Canada and the Top 20 in the US achieving platinum status. The 2 singles that were released in these territories were also major hits.
