Complete your Quintet Of The Hot Club Of France, Django Reinhart, Stéphane Grappelli collection. I don't own this particular release, but I have a lot of music from the most famous formation ever to grace the Parisian Hot Club de France. All these songs are gems, and every bit as relevant today as they were when they were made. I learned a lot from the arrangements used by this formation: a mixture of eastern european, gypsy, ragtime and other kinds of classic american jazz standards (most of them aren't their arrangements per se, but these are probably amongst the most beautiful renditions of said arrangements).

Stéphane Grappelli (26 January, 1908 – 1 December, 1997) was a pioneering jazz violinist who founded with Django Reinhardt in 1934 the "Quintette du Hot Club de France", it was one of the first all-string jazz bands. He has been called "the grandfather of jazz violinists" and continued playing concerts around the world well into his 80s. For the first three decades of his career, he was billed using a gallicised spelling of his last name, Grappelly, reverting to "Grappelli" in 1969.

I don't own this particular release, but I have a lot of music from the most famous formation ever to grace the Parisian Hot Club de France. All these songs are gems, and every bit as relevant today as they were when they were made.I learned a lot from the arrangements used by this formation: a mixture of eastern european, gypsy, ragtime and other kinds of classic american jazz standards (most of them aren't their arrangements per se, but these are probably amongst the most beautiful renditions of said arrangements). Django Reinhardt and his brother laid the foundations for the guitar formations we take for granted today, Django is still one of the most important guitarists ever to have lived, and Stephane Grapelli can grip you just as tightly with his violin play. These two men (the most important soloists) constantly try to outdo each other in probably very friendly competition and it shows throughout the songs. There is such enthousiasm and joy of playing that one cannot help but smile and move to the music. And it stands out from other hot jazz, it is its own brand of european/gypsy hot jazz, with the unusual inclusion of the guitar as a main instrument and an apparent lack of copper instruments. As a young adrenaline junkie who partied to techno/DnB/psytrance beats I already loved it (this music is at its heart dance club music anyway) and as I'm getting older I just find myself adoring it even more. The only thing that bothers me is the technical limits of the age... I'm very certain that people didn't play 3 minute bits all the time every time back then (add to that the fact that one can't always elaborate as one would want during improvisational parts with such limitations, and you realise some of the skill of these people is simply lost to us), and I'm sure they would have sounded much more pleasing to the ear live (a situation that has been reversed long since). Don't let that deter you though, this is music that will follow you your entire life, no matter what your taste in music is, you will find something in this you will like. Beautiful, energising, motivating, interesting, virtuosic music for the ages.
