The Pretenders' debut album was such a powerful, monumental record that its sequel was bound to be a bit of a disappointment, and Pretenders II is. Essentially, this album is an unabashed sequel, offering more of the same sound, attitude, and swagger, including titles that seem like rips on their predecessors and another Ray Davies cover.
The Singles (Pretenders album). The Singles is The Pretenders' 1987 compilation album and features all the band's UK single hits to that date, as well as including "I Got You Babe" which Chrissie Hynde had performed with UB40 in 1985. The album reached in the US album chart and in the UK. "Stop Your Sobbing" – 2:37 (Ray Davies). From 1979 album Pretenders. Kid" – 3:05 (Chrissie Hynde).
The Pretenders issued 'Pretenders II' on Aug. 15, 1981, just before the original lineup disintegrated. The same sense of apprehension governed Pretenders II, a rushed and somewhat too-similar album that arrived on Aug. 15, 1981, with all of the built-in disadvantages of a sequel. Hynde wrote 11 familiar-sounding songs, pairing them, once again, with a cover from boyfriend Ray Davies' catalog. In the end, the whole enterprise seemed reheated, like something that held too much reverence for what came before. But this timeHynde's lyrics weren't as cutting, and Honeyman-Scott's playing felt more careful
Pretenders II first came out in 1981, rose to in Billboardr, and delivered the hit single 'The Adultress. Also features the band's signature classics 'Message Of Love,' 'Talk Of The Town' and 'Pack It U. Plus another sublime cover of a Ray Davies song, 'I Go To Sleep. With a second Ray Davies cover, and "Louie, Louie", you may think that the band pulled out all the stops on their first album, then just coasted for the second one-you'd be wrong, but it's easy to see why. When you consider the output over the past 30 years, and all the turmoil in between, Chrissie Hynde was developing as a songwriter. Pretenders ll was a necessary step in that evolutionary process.
