On Antenna to the Afterworld, Sonny Smith marries an extensive narrative about outer space and alien life with ruminations on the deaths of two close friends. Over the jangling melody of "Girl on the Street", he pines over someone he's never spoken to, but who he stares at from a distance. In "Mutilator", he sings an awed love song about a sword swallower.
What are Sonny & The Sunsets getting at on Antenna to the Afterworld, a fast-moving record of new wave synths and post punk beats? The murder of a close friend of the band led Smith to think a lot about death and life after death. Shortly after, a visit to a psychic/medium brought Smith into contact with another friend who had died. Sonny and the Sunsets - Antenna to the Afterworld. Antenna to the Afterworld is mostly a straightforward blend of these elements. There are male/female vocal harmonies and conversations. There’s a love song to a flower-selling Girl on the Street, there are upbeat, catchy hooks paired with lyrics about feeling a Void, or rather a funny kind of sad joy – on that same track, there’s even the token ‘record someone talking about the song over the top of it’ tactic, as someone says I like that part! and proceeds. to sing along with the bassline

Dealing with both the horrible murder of their friend Esme Barrera and Smith's psychic contact with another dead friend, the album dips into some deep emotions at times, as on the melancholy "Dark Corners" or the lovely, lo-fi doo wop ballad "Path of Orbit.
Album by Sonny and the Sunsets.
Sonny and The Sunsets leader Sonny Smith has worn dozens of different hats in his prolific music career, comfortably crafting tunes in the guise of a hundred different fictitious bands for a single project. Last year he put on a cowboy hat for the heartbroken alt-country set Longtime Companion, and the follow-up finds him donning a space helmet. Ostensibly a concept album about an alien invasion of earth, Antenna To The Afterworld explores the depths of mortality, more romantic troubles, and extreme otherness, all in a synth-drizzled garage pop package
