Bowie at the Beeb is a compilation album by David Bowie, first released in 2000. Originally, it came in a three-CD set, the third, bonus CD being a live recording made on 27 June 2000 at the Portland BBC Radio Theatre.

The Best of the BBC Radio Sessions 68-72: CD1 1-4: John Peel in Top Gear Recorded 1. Recorded at Piccadilly, London. Bowie At The Beeb ‎(2xCD, Comp + CD, Album + Ltd, Sli). 7243 5 28629 2 4, 7243 5 28958 2 3.

This four-LP collection spans David Bowie's second-ever BBC session, in 1968, through to May 1972. Unlike other more carefully curated Bowie box sets, Bowie at the Beeb is an anatomy of how he became a rock star. Sixteen years after being released on CD, Bowie at the Beeb finally gets the vinyl box set treatment, with some scanty bonus bits: a fantastic 1971 rendition of "Oh! You Pretty Things" where Bowie and Mick Ronson perform as a duo, from the Japanese CD, and a previously unheard version of "The Supermen," from March 1970, where he's backed by the Hype.

Bowie At The Beeb, reissued for the first time on vinyl after its release on CD in 2000, presents more of Bowie’s workings for our delectation. So quickly did he evolve between 1968 and 1972 that most of these sessions showcased songs that wouldn’t be in the shops for months. After four songs with the Tony Visconti Orchestra from 1968 and two recorded with Junior’s Eyes in late ’69 (not broadcast at the time), we find Bowie taking over Radio 1 for a full hour in February 1970. Just a month after Hunky Dory’s release in December 1971, Bowie was back at the BBC, now performing in the guise, if not the name, of Ziggy. Out are the quirky piano ballads, and in are sleazy rockers such as Hang On To Yourself, Ziggy Stardust and a propulsive I’m Waiting For The Man.

So I was listening to Bowie At The Beeb right. And David was talking to the host or whoever about a song that he hadn’t released yet because his mother thought the lyrics were dirty. Even the peak foliage will be pushed back this year. I got a lot of free stuff this week. I won a free bagel at Dunkin’ Donuts one day, and free hash browns today. When the Bowie at the Beeb album (2000) was in production, Bowie came forward and offered a clean broadcast of the gig, however, they only used six tracks. Hopefully, one day, we’ll see clean versions of The Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud and the other tracks missing. For now, this is all we have.
