As bop surpassed swing by the late 1940s, James was surprisingly open to its influence.

Such fine singers as Dick Haymes, Helen Forrest, Helen Humes, Kitty Kallen, Art Lund, Rosemary Clooney, and even Willie Smith and Betty Grable (among others) are heard from. Among the more famous recordings are "I'll Get By," "I Don't Want to Walk Without You," "I Had the Craziest Dream," "I've Heard That Song Before", and "It's Been a Long Long Time.
