Operetta was considered a "frivolous" art form. Indeed, together with its grotesque qualities, frivolity is one of the defining elements of "authentic" operetta à la Offenbach and Hervé. It was only later, when audiences widened and became more middle and lower class, that operetta became more "serious" and "nostalgic".
