Totems Flare regains a measure of hospitality from its predecessor, but it brings only one new idea to the table- Clark's singing, which is only partially effective. But his cyber-Teutonic turn on "Rainbow Voodoo" is a bit silly. Clark's voice works best when he uses it like just another sound source; say, as a stuttering, FX-laden pulse in "Look Into the Heart Now"
referencing Totems Flare, 2x12", Album, WARPLP185 " then it changes and you're like, "ohhhhh. I like that" Yeah, something like that.
Showing no signs of slowing down, just after releasing the oceanic-themed Growls Garden EP, in 2009 Chris Clark released his third album in a trilogy of likeminded full-lengths for Warp Records
Clark's music is generally considered to fall under the genre of electronic music, although Clark himself finds this label ambiguous and describes Turning Dragon as a "techno album". He often experiments with forms of degradation, distortion and decay associated with different mediums, employing techniques such as re-recording samples and field-recordings in different environments. Describing such processing, he has.
If his debut Clarence Park said Clark would meander off in many directions then Totems Flare really is a replica of that album. Nothing new or relatively barbaric in approach it would seem that Clark has hit a pitfall in his young musical career. Although the man who carries the original intention of Warp Records' heyday it soon becomes clear on Totem's Flare that he's either lost memory of his past dealings or just plain bored. This may feel like a complaint or a tirade to some, but in all honesty I think Clark's "trilogy" of hard-nosed breakbeats, short ambient.
Totems Flare is the Berlin-based, UK native's boldest effort to date, featuring breakneck Dance, driving Techno and baroque melodics. As such, Totems Flare is the first of Clark's records since Empty the Bones of You (2003) to not be an unqualified success.
