I think What's up is a really polarized way to start a conversation, it could lead to few minutes of nerve-wreaking awkward silence, or if you take the initiative, it could lead to a nice conversation. What I think of "what up" is, that it is like an open canvas, for you to paint what ever you want with your words. Take the conversation to where to want it to go. You could go with something funny and witty, like: "a preposition" (Grammar Nazi alert). not gas prices, surprisingly". dicks and planes, which one are you going down on?"
