This album contains selections from two of the six song cycles (if you can call them that) written by Hugo Wolf, Mörike Lieder written in 1888 and Goethe-Lieder composed two years later in 1890, sung here by Felicity Lott, and accompanied by Geoffrey Parsons. The cover image is Gustav Klimt’s Birkenward I from 1902. While listening to this album, I googled Eduard Mörike, the author of the first set of poems on this album. Hugo Wolf: Mörike Lieder, Goethe Lieder Felicity Lott, soprano Geoffrey Parsons, piano.

Hugo Philipp Jacob Wolf (13 March 1860 – 22 February 1903) was an Austrian composer of Slovene origin, particularly noted for his art songs, or Lieder. He brought to this form a concentrated expressive intensity which was unique in late Romantic music, somewhat related to that of the Second Viennese School in concision but diverging greatly in technique.

Hugo Wolf wrote almost nothing other than songs, but the legacy he left is a rich one. His writing found its peak with his settings of the poet Eduard Mörike, often compared to Britten and Auden or Schubert and Goethe for the perfect marriage of composer and poet. Mörike was a pastor and painter as well as a poet and a great lover of music. His poems range from short, bright reflections on nature and simple love poetry to much darker introverted worlds
