Värttinä is the first album by the band of the same name, Värttinä. On it, the 21-member band performs traditional Karelian folk songs. It was originally self-released in 1987 on vinyl and cassette. In 1992, it was re-released in Finland by Mipu Music. In 1997 it was reissued in Japan by Warner Japan. In the same year, it was reissued in the United States by Finlandia Innovators, under the title Värttinä - The First Album. Ruskie neitsyt" ("Brown-haired Maiden") – 2:19.
The first one with the pithy name Värttinä , was released as a self-financed album in the summer of 1987. They were busy making it after Värttinä was chosen to be the band of the year in Kaustinen folk music festival and they didn’t have their own recording yet. It says something about the pace of the process that the album was recorded durning one weekend in April in Osuuspankki’s cottage in Rääkkylä. In practice, the music was played live in the studio and taped. From Värttinä – On the Wanderer’s Road and the Red Carpet, Kimmo Nevalainen).
Musta Lindu (re-released as Black Bird), is Värttinä's 2nd album, released in 1989 by Olarin Musiikki. Like their first album, it is mostly traditional Karelian and Finnish folk songs, with 15 girls singing and playing kantele and 6 young men on acoustic instruments. In 1998, the album was re-released under the title Black Bird, by Finlandia Innovators. Sorja poika", "Pretty Boy" (traditional, Sari Kaasinen) – 2:58. Musta lindu", "Black Bird" (trad. S. Kaasinen) – 3:02. Itku", "Weep" (S. Kaasinen) – 5:11.
