Enter Harry Harrison and Deathworld, 1961. The story of psionic gambler, Jason DinAlt with an altruistic core of gold in his heart and a stubborn pride that makes him want to prove his worth even in an environment that gives everyone around him a physical superiority. Lord Kerk from Pyrrus, a straightforward, unlucky ambassador from the Deathworld whit limited intellectual curiosity and an even more limited sense of creativity and imagination. Of course, unlike those other works that were so clearly an analogy with a message about Stalin, War, and Corruption, this is also a wonderful space adventure story with powerful adversaries, beautiful people and mysteries to uncover. It's a tale of danger and excitement, of war and death.

I still have a copy of the Jan. 1960 Astounding SF magazine, which contains the first half of Deathworld. Through many moves and packing up boxes of books, this little magazine always went onto the "keep pile". Van Dongen's illustrations are very good and it is too bad they are not included in the ebook.

Categorie(s): Fiction, Action & Adventure, Science Fiction. A large number of his early short stories were first published under house pseudonyms such as 'Wade Kaempfert'. Harrison for a time was closely identified with Brian Aldiss and the pair collaborated on a series of anthology projects. Harrison and Aldiss did much in the 1970s to raise the standards of criticism in the field. Harrison is a writer of fairly liberal worldview. Harrison's work often hinges around the contrast between the thinking man and the man of force, although the "Thinking Man" often needs ultimately to employ force himself.

The Deathworld series by Harry Harrison began with his first published novel Deathworld in 1960. Two more books were followed by a short story, entitled The Mothballed Planet and feature the hero, Jason dinAlit. All the books deal with Jason's encounters with hostile civilizations on other planets. Harrison also wrote the Stainless Steel Rat series, another popular set of books that deal with a comic character called Slippery Slim or the Stainless Steel Rat. His books are known for their nonstop action, larger than life heroes and strange and weird sci-fi descriptions.

A legendary science fiction story, this trilogy, brought back into print in one single volume, presents hero Jason dinAlt as he discovers three separate planets. I don't give a damn about your games, hearty cheers and physical exercises. This is important or I wouldn't be here!"
