Midori's Tchaikovsky is fine, but holds no surprises. The Shostakovich, however, is a different matter - Midori performs this rather difficult work with a creamy, melting sensuality that is in sharp contrast to the usual manner of performance given by the work's dedicatee David Oistrakh, who pointed up its more angular and aggressive characteristics. While both viewpoints on this concerto are valid and "work," one suspects that of the two, the average listener will warm up to Midori a bit more readily

Violin Concerto In D, Op. 35 - 3. Finale: Allegro Vivacissimo.
Concerto No. 1 in A Minor for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 99: Concerto No. 99: I. Nocturne - Adagio. Dimitri Shostakovich wrote his 1st Violin Concerto in a-minor in 1947/48 and was completeing it during the infamous Zhandov Decrees of 1948, in which some Soviet artists, amongst them, Shostakovich were condemned for formalism and other "anti-revolutionary tendencies," whatever those were. I sometimes think the authorities simply made these accusations up as they rolled along, not having any real co-ordinated and cohesive policy on what was and what was not allowable. My main interest is in the Shostakovich Violin Concerto N. I am a huge Shostakovich fan and know the work well from recordings. If there ever was a point to express individualism and how Midori gets Shostakovich it's during the cadenza of the 1st violin concerto.

Her reading of the A minor Shostakovich Concerto also disappoints beside Vengerov’s deeper-hewn, mercurial performance. Teldec also obtains better sound than Sony from Berlin’s sometimes unpredictable Philharmonie.
