The Notwist is the self-titled debut album from the German musical group The Notwist. The record presents a side of the band which has subsided considerably during their recent recordings. Early incarnations of the group saw them exploring very broad avenues of punk and metal, while they would later veer more toward an abstract electronic and indie feel. All songs written by Markus Acher, unless otherwise noted.

Where in This World" is almost cinematic in scope, while "Gone, Gone, Gone," the record's minimalist closer, sends the album (and listener) away quietly. Markus Acher's lyrics have always seemed to me to be elusive-but that's OK. The space they inhabit, somewhere between understood and misheard, is perfectly congruent with the band's aesthetic . But the Notwist have taken an interesting turn with their album, which seems like a more detailed version of Thom Yorke's The Eraser. What separates this indie electronic album from others is its level of sophistication. All the details are carefully placed, and none of it is for dancing.
Third album 12 marked the group's first flirtation with electronics, though the chord structures and vocals of Markus Acher marked the Notwist more as an alternative band. The band then gained an American distribution deal with Zero Hour, and after 12 was reissued, fourth album Shrink - almost entirely abstract electronic in nature - appeared in 1998. Neon Golden (2002) and The Devil, You + Me (2008) were both song-oriented in nature, albeit with electronics continuing to play a significant role in the band's material
