Serfs were the poorest of the peasant class, and were a type of slave. Lords owned the serfs who lived on their lands. In exchange for a place to live, serfs worked the land to grow crops for themselves and their lord. In addition, serfs were expected to work the farms for the lord and pay rent. Hierarchy: Categorization of a group of people according to ability or status. Farmers and peasants lived in simple dwellings called cottages. They built their own homes from wood and the roofs were thatched (made of bundles of reeds that have to be replaced periodically). The interior walls were generally made of wattle and daub - an arrangement of twigs weaved into a wall shape and coated with mud and straw to make a hard, plaster-like surface to keep out drafts. Often farmers, peasants and serfs brought their animals into their homes to protect them.

The serfs made up just over a third of the population and formed half of the peasantry. They were most heavily concentrated in the central and western provinces of Russia. Why was it necessary to end Serfdom? In a number of respects serfdom was not dissimilar to the feudalism that had operated in many parts of pre-modern Europe. Emancipation proved the first in a series of measures that Alexander produced as a part of a programme that included legal and administrative reform and the extension of press and university freedoms. But behind all these reforms lay an ulterior motive. Alexander II was not being liberal for its own sake. According to official records kept by the Ministry of the Interior (equivalent to the Home Office in Britain) there had been 712 peasant uprisings in Russia between 1826 and 1854.

Lord Douglas died so long before the morning; His love she died tomorrow. Lord Douglas died of the wounds her father gave him; His lady died for sorrow. She was buried in the yard, And he was buried by her, And out her heart a crimson rose, And out his heart a briar. The briar and the rose grew up together, Till they could get no higher, And there they twined a true love's knot together For all love to admire. Lyrics powered by ww. usixmatch.
