The dawn chorus occurs when birds sing at the start of a new day. In temperate countries this is most noticeable in spring when the birds are either defending a breeding territory, trying to attract a mate, or calling in the flock.

John Hutchinson is a pioneer of wildlife sound recording in Australia. His first recordings were made on acetate discs. Then, when the newly-invented tape recorders appeared in Australian shops after World War II, John purchased one and began a life-long hobby of sound recording.
