Live at Pit Inn, 1985. Recorded in August of 1985 at a Tokyo club and released only in Japan, Live At Pit Inn documents a typical Elvin Jones live set. The nearly-an-hour long set consists of 2 compositions by Jones, 2 nfluenced compositions by Jones' wife, Keiko Jones, and a standard played as a ballad. But with Jones, it doesn't matter what the band plays, for the compositions merely serve as springboards for improvisations by the band's members, with Jones' always powerful polyrhythms setting the pace.

This is BY FAR Wynton Marsalis' finest hour as a jazz musician. His playing here is absolutely on fire and swinging beyond belief. Elvin and Marcus Roberts are also outstanding.

The first Pit Inn was located in Shinjuku. From its early days, both domestic and international musicians played there. In 1968, for instance, The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra played at the Pit Inn. Other activities also took place: a photography exhibition in 1968 was an early example. Some of the most prominent Japanese jazz musicians played at the club early in their careers. An asterisk ( ) indicates that the album was recorded at the Roppongi Pit Inn. Year recorded.
