There are wonderful solo mandolin recordings of this piece on albums by Alison Stephens ("Con Espressione") and Chris Acquavella ("Praeludium"), but I decided to take it somewhere else by playing it on mandola in CGDA, transposing it down by a fifth from G minor to C minor but preserving the fingering indicated in Ms Pakenham's original handwritten score. I was particularly intrigued to listen to my recording back-to-back with the Alison Stephens recording of the same piece on her "Con Espressione" album. Because it's such a simple piece, across the chasm of technical proficiency between her and me and the professional recording against the improvised home demo, the one thing that stands out to me is that there is no doubt that there is such a thing as the "Embergher tone", consistent across the Maestro's entire range from my modest Tipo A student.

Alison Stephens (1 March 1970 – 10 October 2010) was an English classical mandolin player and film musician. Stephens was born in Bickley, Kent, and educated at James Allen's Girls' School and Haileybury and began playing the mandolin at the age of seven, inspired by her father, who had played the instrument during the Second World War. She was the first graduate in the instrument from Trinity College of Music in London
