Dan Smith knows the end times are nigh, and it’s going to take a lot more than a massive bender to pull him back from the brink. On the London-based quartet Bastille’s third album Doom Days, out today (June 14), frontman and lead songwriter Dan Smith maps out a debaucherous night of self-indulgence that may or may not be occurring amid actual armageddon. Finding themselves stationary for the first time since their breakout single Pompeii scorched the alt-rock airwaves in 2013, the band settled into their newly-owned studio in South London called One Eyed Jack’s, inspired by Smith’s long-time infatuation with surreal '90s crime soap Twin Peaks. Smith describes the initial concept of Doom Days as a direct reaction to their big, sprawling 2016 sophomore record Wild World, with a heavier electronic dance influence, simple, straightforward lyrics and a brisk runtime.

The band announced their third studio album, which is to be released on 14 June 2019. Speaking to NME, Smith said "We never really stop writing and recording, but I can confirm we spent a lot of this year writing our third album. On 1 September 2017, the band headlined the annual Pilton Party Held. at Pilton Worthy Farm, home of Glastonbury Festival. On 9 November 2017, the band released a music video for World Gone Mad, a song for the Netflix movie Bright.

And it means that the independent label founded by frontman Dan Smith with Mark Crew and Dan Priddy now has a proper home for its artists, which include Rationale and Rag’n’Bone Man. There’s also plenty of space for artists to record – it’s where The Wombats made their top 10 album Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, produced by Crew – and where Bastille have been working on their upcoming third album  .

Thought I'd never be waking on the kitchen floor But here I lie, not the first time Now my morning has broken, and it brings the fear My mind's falling, fall in. Then I feel my pulse quickening But regrets can't change anything Yeah, I feel my pulse quickening When your name lights up the screen. Dan Smith spoke about the song during its first ever play on BBC Radio 1. He spoke about the album being set during a night out, and that Joy is the final song on the album, it is representative of the ‘morning after’ where you wake up on the kitchen floor following the events of the night out portrayed in the rest of. the songs on the album. What have the artists said about the song?
