My first listen to this album by California four piece Bog Oak was one such moment. Right from the moment I hit play, I was bobbing my head to the entrancing rhythms and encircling arrangements. Then at 3:15 of the first track The Science of the Afterlife, magic happened. This is the moment when the clean vocals first hit. I was blindsided by the haunting beauty of Elise Tarens voice. You see, up to that point, the vocals are an excellent raspy growl, all sandpaper edges, and vileness. The moment of contrast when the ethereal cleans hit is transcendent. Bog Oak has only been around for only two years. A Treatise on Resurrection and the Afterlife begs a couple questions for me. Where do they go from here and can they maintain the high bar they've set for themselves? I hope the answer to the first is upwards and the answer to the second is yes.

Bog Oak are a fuzz-drenched blackened doom outfit from California formed in May of 2013. Their debut EP "A Treatise On Resurrection And The Afterlife" consists of four allegories that pay as much homage to Black Sabbath and Hellhammer as they do to the metaphysics of Mulla Sadra, Suhrawardi's philosophy of illumination and the alchemy of Al-Ghazali. With their commitment to huge, gnarly guitar and bass tones, thundering drums, and vocals that range from demonic screams to angelic cleans, Bog Oak create a heavy brew of mystical dirges and forsaken atmospheres.
