Stephen Sondheim - A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) download mp3 album
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart. Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251–183 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus, and Mostellaria, the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door
As only five songs from Stephen Sondheim's droll score were retained for the film, it is unlikely the soundtrack album will hold much appeal for devotees of the original show. The 1966 film adaptation and its soundtrack album features a stellar cast of comedians including Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford, Buster Keaton, and Michael Crawford.
The bad news is that so little of the original Stephen Sondheim score was retained - only five songs, among them "Comedy Tonight. Filling out the film and this album is a musical score added by Ken Thorne, which won an Academy Award even if it did not, as reissue annotator Didier C. Deutsch claims, "seamlessly into Sondheim's own themes to form a cohesive musical whole. Rather, it is strikingly different and inferior. Better to stick to the original Broadway cast album from 1962 or the more recent revival cast album.
Released by Quartet Records in 2012 containing music from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966). Director Richard Lester's adaptation was not entirely faithful to Sondheim's successful musical; indeed, the director selected only five of Sondheim's original 16 songs, which were included in the film more in the style of video clips (as in his two previous films with The Beatles) than in the manner of a traditional movie musical. The sound is much improved and newly remastered from the original stereo 1/2" album masters from the MGM vaults, and a 1/4" tape with acceptable sound (also in stereo) from the private library of Mr. Thorne.
One fresco depicts a Roman orgy, but one character raises the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) seal in protest. But this Sondheim musical is the sole example of Roman Comedy - specifically the play MILES GLORIOUSUS ("THE BOASTFUL SOLDIER"). When Aristophanes created "Old Comedy" he created a phantasy comedy of kingdoms of birds or dead playwrites holding contests for supremacy. Political satire was also quite important. For that reason alone A FUNNY THING HAPPENED is worth watching and enjoying.
