She was in famous play, "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs" when Sandy Dennis was the understudy for Evans Evans and later in the film "Up the Down Staircase" with Sandy Dennis. It was during the intermission of "War & Peace" and we were dining at Sardi's and the waiter handed her my note: "Bet you never thought you would be on another staircase with Sandy Dennis!" She loved that so much that she asked me to join her and her husband Mr. Yankee. What a wonderful day for me!

Sandy Dennis died from ovarian cancer at her home in Westport, Connecticut, at age 5. .Dennis lived with prominent jazz musician Gerry Mulligan from 1965 until they split up in 1974. She lived with actor Eric Roberts from 1980 to 1985 despite their 19 year age difference. In an interview with People magazine in 1989, Dennis revealed she and Gerry Mulligan had suffered a miscarriage in 1965 and went on to say, "if I'd been a mother, I would have loved the child, but I just didn't have any connection with it when I was pregnan. never, ever wanted children. Up the Down Staircase is a 1967 American drama film directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Sandy Dennis, Patrick Bedford, Eileen Heckart, and Jean Stapleton. The plot concerns the first, trying assignment for a young, idealistic teacher.

To Kill a Mockingbird producer Alan J. Pakula and director Robert Mulligan memorably bring it to the screen. Eileen Heckart, Ruth White and Jean Stapleton play school staffers. And fresh-faced newcomers from inner-city classrooms portray the students. The result ranks among Stand and Deliver and Lean on Me as one of the best-ever films about the triumph of teaching and learning.
