Steve Frank Ashley (born 9 March 1946) is an English singer-songwriter, recording artist, t, writer and graphic designer. Ashley is best known as a songwriter and first gained public recognition for his work with his debut solo album, Stroll On (Gull, 1974).

In 1975, Gull Records licensed the album to Motown in the United States and Ashley’s first American tour was underwritten by that company. In spring 1975 Ashley undertook a six-week solo tour of the USA and Canada, opening shows for many artists including Leon Redbone, Tracy Nelson, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman and Jonathan Edwards.

Sleeve Notes by Steve Ashley. In January 1979 the Steve Ashley Family Show was first performed in Cheltenham. Taking part were Chris Leslie, Dave Pegg, Simon Nicol and Martin Brinsford along with a couple of dancers and a slapstick pastry cook. I had hoped to see them released on an album by 1980, but the record companies that we approached at the time were unwilling to take the risk.

Upon release, Steve Ashley's debut album was rated The Sunday Telegraph's folk album of the year, and even landed its maker a . deal with Motown, which released it to wild acclaim in America in 1975. Across the board, Ashley seemed set for a powerful career. Instead, he all but vanished, releasing new albums with infuriating irregularity and condemning Stroll On to a "lost treasure" status that wholly undervalues its importance.
