Darkness on the Edge of Town is the fourth studio album by Bruce Springsteen, released on June 2, 1978. The album marked the end of a three-year gap between albums brought on by contractual obligations and legal battling with former manager Mike Appel. Although the album did not produce high-charting singles it remained on the charts for 97 weeks. A steady seller in Springsteen's catalog, it has been certified triple Platinum by the RIAA.

The Deluxe Package also includes Darkness on the Edge of Town, digitally remastered for the first time, as well as the 2 CD set The Promise: The Lost Sessions from Darkness On The Edge Of Town. The two discs contain a total of 21 d songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after Born To Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness on the Edge of Town became. 3. THE PROMISE - 2 CD'S OF OUTTAKES FROM THE DARKNESS SESSIONS The Bruce camp has been touting this as sort of the lost album between Born To Run and Darkness. That is marketing and nothing more. This is not in any way a cohesive album of songs anywhere close to those 2 masterpieces. These are outtakes, similar to the Tracks collection and even the many bootleg cd's released over the years.

The original classic remastered. In 1978, Springsteen broke the three-year silence that had followed Born To Run by releasing that album’s polar opposite – the stark, unsettled Darkness On The Edge Of Town. The long break hadn’t been by choice. In July of ’76, nine months after the release of Born To Run, he had entered into a legal battle with his former manager, Mike Appel.

Bruce Springsteen’s output between 1987 and 1996-remastered and collected in this new vinyl box set-tells a story of lost faith and self-doubt. If Springsteen were simply the one telling the story and not also the flailing protagonist tangled up in it, there’d be some catharsis, or at the very least a saxophone solo. Human Touch is an album cobbled together over several languid years during which Springsteen aimed to compose admittedly generic music to pad his upcoming live shows. Not to mention, a compilation of this era isn’t quite definitive without his 1990 solo shows, or non-album cuts like the Oscar-winning Streets of Philadelphia, or the mini E Street reunion included at the end of 1995’s Greatest Hits.
