Live in Tasmania is a live album by American fingerstyle guitarist and composer John Fahey, released in 1981. It was his first live album release after 18 albums. After 18 studio albums, Fahey released this live album from a concert in Tasmania, set up, according to the original liner notes, on a drunken whim. It was recorded on four days' notice at the University of Tasmania in 1980 when Fahey was touring Australia.
John Fahey was well known as a perfectionist who played concerts for over two decades without releasing a live album. It was therefore something of a surprise when he not only recorded a full album in front of an audience, but did so at a concert booked on four days notice, at a hall he had never seen much less checked for acoustics, and with almost all material written on the spur of the moment
John Fahey was a notoriously unpredictable live performer, but this impromptu performance in a far corner of the world was a very, very good night, as he played half-dozen compositions, most of them made up on the spot! Features the magical Indian-Pacific . It's an honest live album, with a very airy reverberation present in all the tracks (must have been played in a large hall) that adds a bit of charm that you don't get in studio efforts. It's a bit short but seems to be very quality Fahey.
