Sister Rosetta Tharpe was born on March 20, 1915 as Rosetta Nubin in Cotton Plant, Arkansas to Katie Bell Nubin and Willis Atkins, who were cotton pickers. On October 31, 1938, aged 23, Tharpe recorded for the first time – four sides for Decca Records, backed by Lucky Millinder's jazz orchestra. The first gospel songs recorded by Decca, "Rock Me," "That's All," "My Man and I" and "The Lonesome Road" were instant hits, establishing Tharpe as an overnight sensation and one of the first commercially successful gospel recording. The Brixton band Alabama 3 named a track after Tharpe on their debut album, Exile on Coldharbour Lane (1997) ("Sister Rosetta"), and recorded a version of her song "Up Above My Head". I'm so glad some how I've got salvation nowIt keeps the spirit moving in my soulEvery day I findIt's peace and joy of mindAnd keeps me singing in my soul. Oh I'm singing, yes I'm singing in my soulWhen the burdens rollI sing from morn to nightIt makes my burdens lightAnd I'm singing, yes I'm singing in my soul.

Those titles - This Train, Rock Me, Singing in My Soul, and Shout Sister Shout - document Sister Rosetta Tharpe's Decca recordings from the late '30s through WWII.
