Dev Hynes' third album as Blood Orange is a searing and soothing personal document, striking the same resonant chords as Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly or D’Angelo’s Black Messiah. Freetown Sound, Hynes’ third album as Blood Orange, arrives days after Baltimore police officer Caesar Goodson J. who drove the van in which 25-year-old Freddie Gray was fatally injured, was found not guilty on all charges against him. That same day, a grand jury in Collin County, Texas, decided there wasn’t enough evidence to indict former McKinney police officer Eric Casebolt for slamming a black teenage girl to the ground at a pool party. 2011’s Coastal Grooves-Hynes’ first album as Blood Orange-combined new wave and electro-soul, even if the results just barely scratched the surface of what we hear from him now.

Code Orange have just issued a new documentary titled My World, but in the midst of promoting that artistic piece, singer-drummer Jami Morgan spoke with Revolver and revealed that the band has started work on their follow-up to 2017's Forever album. We’re always working on stuff. I would say yes, we’re about done and we don’t necessarily like to look at it that way completely, but there are opportunities that have been coming up so we’ll see.
