Santuri s Embaire Umeme EP got a Worldwide Premiere from Gilles Peterson On a never-ending quest to support and exposure far off musical cultures around the world, the next On The Corner releases sees them look to Uganda. Teaming up with Santuri (an East African electronic music innovation project) and Soundthread (a creative development non-profit), they have worked alongside the Mugwisa International Xylophone Group with modern recording techniques and further re-arrangement on two remixes
In stock now for same day shipping. The project features electronic musicians Santuri, Soundthread and OtC re-modelling acoustic recordings of Uganda's Mugwisa International Xylophone group. These tracks will see the light of day later this year; first, a trio of tracks gets given the remix treatment. First, Sam Jones delivers an undulating, Afrobeat-influenced interpretation of "Jinja Pearls", before Alejandro Mosso laces sweet, evocative, Ugandan instrumentation over rolling electronic house beats on his version of "Mazongoto Woods".

Last year’s On the Corner underground smash release, the 12 EP Santuri’s Embaire Umeme, introduced Uganda’s Mugwisa International Xylophone Group (. The recordings center on the Embaire, a giant xylophone native to Ugandan folk music, which is dug into a pit for a natural, earthy bass resonance as gargantuous as the instrument itself.
Vibes alive from Uganda’s Mugwisa International Xylophone Group (. jamming with local producer Jude Mugwera and Sam Jones from SoundThread to work out three hypnotic fusions of traditional xylophone with minimal house and loping breakbeat hustle. The Sam Jones Construct version of Jinja Pearls is strongest and perhaps least conventional, loosely percolating cracking wooden drum breaks with slivers of chicken scratch funk guitar around . s xylo-jam, starting out spacious and hypnotic but arriving somewhere more more intense, psychedelic by the end, sounding something like Dawit.
