What I Was Arrested For: The Performance That Got Lenny Bruce Busted. Released: April 1, 1992. 1. I Just Do It and That's All.

The title of the album is a little bit misleading, because Lenny Bruce talks about the performance in San Francisco that got him busted. In other words, those expecting the cops to storm onto the stage at the end will be disappointed.

Excellent recordings of Lenny Bruce doing his finest monologues are easily avail able, yet the public has re jected them in favor of the printed word (in contradiction of Marshall McLuhan's thesis that we are moving from a print to an oral culture). The truth is that Lenny Bruce was authentically shocking and ni hilistic to a degree never matched on the American stage. Though the words he used were the principal evidence in the police officers' complaints, what really pro voked the authorities was Lenny's attitude toward every thing sacred. The trickiest part of the Lenny Bruce Myth is the con tention that he was dragged from court to court and har assed to death.

The real Lenny Bruce, you see, spent a lot of time shuttling in and out of jail cells. His relentless commitment to his comedy occasionally rendered him a criminal. Over the course of his provocative career, Bruce racked up quite an extensive rap sheet. In 1961, Bruce was charged with violating California’s obscenity law at San Francisco’s Jazz Workshop (he said the word c sucker). He was charged with possession of drugs in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. He was arrested on stage in Chicago. It's really Lenny's legacy that he opened up the comedy club as the greatest free speech zone in America," Skover told NPR.

Carlin was present at Lenny Bruce's arrest for obscenity. As a tax shelter he bought a private jet – a twin-engine Aero Commander 1121 Jet Commander  . People who go to Las Vegas, you've got to question their fucking intellect to start with. Traveling hundreds and thousands of miles to essentially give your money to a large corporation is kind of fucking moronic. That's what I'm always getting here is these kind of fucking people with very limited intellects. When an audience member shouted "Stop degrading us!"

Lenny Bruce was born Leonard Alfred Schneider in Mineola, New York, grew up in nearby Bellmore, and attended Wellington C. Mepham High School.

In 2013, The Guardian wrote, Lenny Bruce was not the first standup comedian, but he did create what we now mean by ‘standup comedy. The idea of some guy on a stage, often some guy with problems, who finds himself at odds with the establishment and has only his wits to resist with: that all begins with Bruce. Life is a four-letter word. In September 1961, he was arrested after cops entered his Philadelphia hotel room and found methadone, speed, and needles. Although it made national headlines, that particular arrest did not lead to a conviction as the grand jury failed to indict; the comedian had prescriptions for everything he’d been arrested with. At the time, Bruce was convinced the arrest was retribution for his handling of religion in his on-stage performances. That would not be Bruce’s last drug arrest.
