Jazz fusion (also known as fusion) is a music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock and roll started to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll.

Jazz-Rock Fusion, which began in the late 1960's, combined the ambient feel of Modal Jazz, the Funk groove, and the Rock solo, over a straight rhythm. For example, the album In a Silent Way was recorded in a session that was over 2 hours long but was cut down to 27 minutes and then expanded to 38 minutes by repeat some parts. And you’ll notice that the songs on these albums are generally quite long. They are almost like Prog Rock meets Jazz.
The second of two Rhino CDs mostly covers the 1975-1984 period (with Miles Davis' "Mr. Pastorius" dating from 1989). One of the most interesting aspects to this reissue is that it not only has examples of jazz musicians playing rock, but rock musicians coming closer to performing jazz.
As with jazz, fusion often employs brass and woodwind instruments such as trumpet and saxophone as melody and soloing instruments but other instruments often substitute for these. As with traditional jazz improvisation, fusion instrumentalists generally require a high level of technical proficiency. Davis' 1969 album In a Silent Way is considered his first fusion album.
