John Denver wasn't merely hot during the mid-'70s; he was omnipresent on radio, TV, and on-stage for anyone who'd have him. Certainly, few artists enjoyed more than one greatest-hits collection - even if critics derided him as a granola-munching, tree-hugging folky who perennially smiled through life's hardships. But the reality of Denver's music is more complicated; behind the lush orchestration and gentle fingerpicking lies a more somber, contemplative side.

Along with volumes one and three, this trilogy includes the best of John Denver's hits. He put the Colorado Rockies on the map and is a necessary part of a seventy's music collector. His soft ballads and love songs speak to the heart and to the land he loved. Way back in my college days, I had both "Greatest Hits" albums on vinyl. I guess I'm getting sentimental - when I spotted this album on CD, I had to have it. And, indeed, it has evoked many memories of college, dating my wife, our first kids, during which time we played the albums repeatedly. No wonder our kids think our briefly living in Colorado is the high point of their childhood. My only disappointment is that the cover used for Vo. on this CD is not the cover used on the cassette and vinyl releases back in the 1970's

After supper we'd sit around the fire The old folks'd spit and chew Pa would talk about the farm and the war And granny'd sing a ballad or two I'd sit and listen and watch the fire 'Till the cobwebs filled my head Next thing I'd know I'd wake up in the morning In the middle of. the old feather bed. It was nine feet high and six feet wide Soft as a downy chick It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick It'd hold eight kids 'n' four hound dogs And a piggy we stole from the shed We didn't.
