Greatest Hits 1970–1978 is a compilation album from Black Sabbath, released in 2006. This album features only the original line-up of Black Sabbath with all the albums Ozzy Osbourne worked on presented from 1970's self-titled debut album to 1978's Never Say Die!. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 album chart on 1 April 2006 at number 96. It spent 10 weeks on the chart. It was released to coincide with the band's induction into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

On this greatest hits collection, the ratio's less favorable- out of 16 total tracks, three are turds from the post-Sabotage era, plus one underwhelming track each from both Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage. Were I in an Old Testament mood, I'd simply draw the line at Vol. 4 and start turning heathens into salt. Such a demarcation means folks who bought this comp could cut bait with the "Supernaut" and display their devil horns with pride. From the first bell toll of "Black Sabbath" until "Supernaut" fades to black 11 tracks later, the band's greatness is unmistakable. Iommi must have brought a few extra virgins to the crossroads when he met up with old Lucifer, as the leads to songs like "War Pigs", "Black Sabbath", and "Iron Man" are inescapable and eternal. That the compilers saw it fit to indiscriminately chop two minutes off of "Iron Man" is just another strike against this disc.

Rhino's 16-track Greatest Hits 1970-1978 anthology only trumps the single-disc We Sold Our Soul CD by two songs, but it offers superior sound and features at least a few cuts from 1976's Technical Ecstasy and 1978's Never Say Die!, the band's last two pre-millennium Ozzy records. All of the faves are here ("Paranoid," "War Pigs," "Iron Man"), as well as fan classics like "Hole in the Sky" and "Supernaut," but there is enough material missing to call it a sampler rather than a "best o.
