Prince wanted Sign O' The Times to be a triple album called "The Crystal Ball," but in a rare rebuke, his record company refused, and instead it was pared down to a double album. This was one of the first significant conflicts between Prince and Warner Bros. Records; over the next few years Prince grew to resent the label, which was restricting his output. Prince wrote, produced, and recorded the album on his own, which is something he did early in his career. On his previous three albums, he has more input from his group The Revolution. This was the first single from Sign O' The Times, which also spawned "U Got the Look," "If I Was Your Girlfriend," and "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Ma. The album wasn't his most successful, reaching just in the US, but it aged well and is considered some of Prince's best work, showcasing his versatility and originality.
Sign O’ the Times Lyrics. This hit became the key theme and title track of Prince’s 1987 album, following many unreleased and dismissed projects under different concepts. Here, he expresses his depressed view of the chaotic, frenzied present world – In a funky tune. Sign O' The Times (stylicized as Sign ☮ The Times ) became one of Prince’s signature songs and the definition of the end of the vinyl era. In a minimalist-blues style, he muses about drug use, health issues and the human fascination with the outer world among other things and foreshadows many things that would come in future generations.
The album he released on March 31, 1987 was a Prince solo record that, like his 1980 artistic breakthrough Dirty Mind and his two earlier albums, was essentially a one-man-band recording which relied heavily on the LinnDrum, various samplers, and his remarkable aptitude on every instrument under the sun. Of the 16 songs on Sign o’ the Times, only three have co-writers, and save for one track ( It’s Going to Be a Beautiful Night ), outside musical accompaniment is slight. But unlike his earlier solo efforts, Sign o’ the Times wasn’t a record by an ambitious kid trying to make impression. At 28, Prince had already made himself into a pop superstar (and movie star too), and he easily sold out arenas. In one sense, he had nothing to prove.
