Born George Hoy Booth in Wigan, Lancashire on 26 May 1904, he later took his father's stage name of George Formby. He briefly attended school where he failed to learn to read or write so was removed from formal education and sent to become a stable boy in Middleham, North Yorkshire, where he later became an apprentice jockey.

George Formby first sang this song in the film "Feather Your Nest", released July 19, 1937 and directed by William Beaudine. This performance was after the song had already been performed by Val Rosing. The recording released as a single is not the same as in the film: in fact it was made after the film premiered. George Formby Happy Go Lucky Me. George Formby, OBE (26 May 1904 – 6 March 1961), was a British actor, singer-songwriter and comedian. He sang light, comical songs, usually playing the ukulele or banjolele. He was a major star of stage and screen in the 1930s and '40s, when Formby became the UK's highest-paid entertainer. His songs such as "When I'm Cleaning Windows" were particularly popular during the Second World War (1939–45). When he and his wife travelled throughout the war, creating improvised lyrics to songs to fit the situation, they delighted their audiences.
