Critical Mass is the sixth album by British progressive metal band Threshold. It was recorded in early 2002 and released in September. It is also the last album to feature original bassist Jon Jeary, who left immediately after the release. He was replaced by Steve Anderson, who appears on the live album Critical Energy and subsequent albums. Phenomenon" (Richard West) – 5:27. Choices" (Karl Groom, Jon Jeary) – 8:21. Falling Away" (West) – 6:53. Fragmentation" (Groom, Jeary) – 6:34.
Critical Mass is Threshold's sixth studio album since their debut released in 1993. Everything a prog metal album should contain is here: some lengthy tracks and unpredictable song structures, powerful guitar riffs with both guitar and keyboard solos, awesome technical drum work, several atmospheric instrumental passages, beautiful vocal harmonies throughout the album, it's all here for your enjoyment and it's all very pleasing to the ears. Where Threshold's Critical Mass differs a bit from other prog metal music is the melancholic feel of this album as a whole
Critical Mass finally marked a period of stability for the . progressive metal group Threshold. For once, the band released a new studio album within two years of the previous one, with the same lineup and on the same label. How did it translate into the music? By a growth in the group's musical strengths and maybe just a step backward in the writing. As for the writing, a few songs sound a little too catchy for their own good, with the seams of the solos and bridge sections showing. Two noteworthy exceptions are "Echoes of Life," an impressive take on the soft-hard-soft epic, and the closing 14-minute title track (which includes the only acoustic guitar segment of the whole album). Phenomenon" and "Fragmentation" are supported by their catchy melodies and crunchy riffs, but they remain rather plain. On the other hand, "Round and Round" features a very ingenious chorus.

Sure, the music isn’t the most technical or groundbreaking, but it’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of the genre. So, let’s take a plunge into the album. We open with an eerie sounding build up for 10 seconds or so, and then pounded as suddenly the guitars, drums and electronic sounding keyboard come in, something that will be present throughout the entire album, giving the album a modern touch. The album itself is nothing groundbreaking. Simply put, the band just play quality consistent music throughout, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, some listeners may be turned off if they are looking for fresh sounds
While Hypothetical has several songs that didn't go on my MP3 player, Critical Mass doesn't have a single bad song. And the fact that the first 4 songs are all on the DVD Critical Energy should tell you something. All 4 are great but I particularly like Falling Away and Fragmentation.
