Inspiral Carpets are an English rock band formed in Oldham in 1983. The band's most successful lineup featured frontman Tom Hingley, drummer Craig Gill, guitarist Graham Lambert, bassist Martyn Walsh and keyboardist Clint Boon. Formed by guitarist Graham Lambert and singer Stephen Holt, who departed the band before they signed with Mute Records, the band's sound was characterised by the use of organ playing and distorted guitars. The band was part of the late 1980s and early 1990s Madchester movement.
Life is the debut studio album by the British indie rock band Inspiral Carpets. It was released on 23 April 1990 on Cow Records, through Mute Records, during the period dubbed Madchester by the British media. Inspiral Carpets were one of the bands that distinguished (at least among my American circle of friends in Seattle, back in the pre-grunge days)whether you really knew the Madchester scene or no. .Nevertheless, I found Singles to be an enjoyable album - maybe not as dancey like Happy Mondays or Blur, but still fun to listen to. They sound sort of like how the Jam would have sounded if they had played in the late 60's - the lead singer's voice is a dead ringer for Paul Weller.
