Debussy and Ravel are unfortunately not given their due artistic respect in this album, which is overall too slow and lacking in energy. In Prélude a l'après-midi d'un faune the rather lethargic introduction and flute solo do not make the music come alive. A few minutes into the piece, the strings are sweeping and the orchestra comes into its fullness, but this simply does not give the listener the full effect of Debussy and his use of orchestral tone colors. The sound mixing is not ideal in this piece or in most of the album, for the harp is not very audible, and the higher voices also suffer. Radnofsky's saxophone solo in Rapsodie is played with great agility, like a clarinet. But the recording quality is simply too soft, even if Masur leads the orchestra to a loud fury at the end with majestic and grand brass.

Debussy : Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. No one thought that Kurt Masur would bring incandescent inspiration to the NY Phil. when he arrived in 1991, but he had a reputation as an orchestra builder, much needed after the laxness of the Zubin Mehta era, and he was an imposing presence, especially after the fight he led against the Communist regime in East Germany.

Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (L. 86), known in English as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, is a symphonic poem for orchestra by Claude Debussy, approximately 10 minutes in duration. It was composed in the year 1894, the same year that the piece was first performed. It was first performed in Paris on 22 December 1894, conducted by Gustave Doret. The flute solo was played by Georges Barrère.

Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic are scarcely the first team that leaps to mind for this repertory, and although these performances are mostly pleasing I can’t say they are especially idiomatic or full of insight. Part of the problem lies with the recorded sound. Debussy’s saxophone Rapsodie, a notorious potboiler, goes acceptably, but from the opening flute solo on, melodic phrases of this Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune lack rhythmic profile and impetus – is this playing the cause of Masur’s immobile tempi, or the result?
