Call Mr. Robeson has played over 200 times in several countries since its 2007 launch. Aluko has moved audiences the world over, and audiences have moved him. He recalls a performance where 600 Nigerian schoolboys stood up, clapped and shouted after he performed Ol’ Man River at Kings College in Lagos - the school he left in 1978. Decades ago, I was one of those boys. I hope that, from seeing that show, one of those 600 boys will accomplish something like this

Frank Moher speaks with Tayo Aluko about his play, Call Mr. Robeson, coming to both the Gabriola Theatre Festival and the Fringetastic Theatre Festival in Nanaimo. Seems a little quiet over here. AMERICAN OMNICIDE’ - July 3, 2019.

Call Mr Robeson is a rollercoaster journey through Robeson’s remarkable life, highlighting how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. Director - Olusola Oyeleye. Designer - Phil Newman. Unlike film, theatre doesn't have an official age classification organisation. Fringe Festival show Call Mr Robeson has been a hit in the UK and US. Tom Cardy meets the creator and performer determined to tell the story of singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson. Like many people aged under 65, British-Nigerian singer, actor and writer Tayo Aluko once only had a vague idea of who American singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson was. That all changed 20 years ago. The moment was so important that he can still remember the exact date, seated in the off-beat Wellington venue and nautical-themed homestead The Moorings in Thorndon, where Aluko begins performing tonight.

Tayo Aluko tells of the chance encounter that led him on an extraordinary journey in the company of Paul Robeson. His resulting interest in socialism would lead to his demonisation, and to him subsequently being buried from public consciousness – hence my ignorance of him. The Snowdown choir were due to compete in the 1985 Miners’ Eisteddfod in Porthcawl, but it was cancelled because of the Miners’ Strike. I started performing Call Mr. Robeson in earnest in 2008 in England and abroad, and found the name Paul Robeson opening doors to me everywhere. Australian and New Zealand Trade Unions have sponsored this most recent leg of my journey, and I can already feel a warm ‘Welcome in the hillsides’ awaiting me as I prepare to bring Robeson’s inspiring story ‘Home Again To Wales’.

Robeson's battles are far from won, and "Call Mr. Robeson" (the title is a reference to his appearance before the House Un-American Activities Committee during the McCarthy witch hunt) stirringly reminds us of exactly that. Self-presented as part of the New York International Fringe Festival at the Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery, NYC. Aug. 14–28. Remaining performances: Wed. 24, 7:15 . Th. 25, 615 . Fr. 26, 9:30 .
